Come for the Burger, Stay for the Sunset: Dinner at Nepenthe in Big Sur

The atmosphere at Nepenthe is one thing — the food is another. But together, the views and their burger make it one of my favorite stops on the Big Sur coast.
We timed our visit for a quiet sunset dinner and it was pure magic. The restaurant sits high above the Pacific, and whether it’s a clear day or golden hour, the view is unreal. You’re looking out over a forest that drops straight down to the ocean. It’s the kind of scenery that stops conversation for a moment.

Outdoor seating with the fire pit is the way to go if you can get it. They have heaters when the evening air cools, so you can stay comfortable while the light changes. Indoors is cozy with a fire going for ambiance, but the space is tiny — arrive early because they don’t take reservations.
Service is consistently good and the people are always nice. I’ll be honest: most of the menu isn’t really something I would order. But that burger is the reason I keep coming back. It’s amazing — especially with that view in front of you.
A few practical notes: parking can get a little tight when it’s busy, so you might have to circle. While you’re there, stop by the Phoenix Shop for a gift or something for yourself, and don’t miss the fun old-school telephone booth. It’s a charming little detail that adds to the place’s character.
Whether you’re making the scenic drive from Santa Cruz or further along Highway 1, Nepenthe is worth it. Come for the burger, stay for the sunset. Highly recommend.
